Life's A Witch And Then You Fly

I like proverbs, at least good ones. Some time ago I came across a site called contemplate ability proverbs that features proverbs from around the world: 2,866 proverbs, to be exact. I certainly did not go through all of them, but of those I did, I copied three, rediscovering them only today. To me, a proverb can be a powerful and pithy embodiment of a moral message whose ultimate roots go back to those two cardinal virtues of loving God and one's neighbor as oneself.

We must blame the thief first before we say that where the owner put her property [was] improper.

(Yoruban) #2141 of 2866. type: responsibility

Treat the lesser as you would have the greater treat you.

(Venezuelan) #2133 of 2866. type: respect

In trying to straighten the horns you kill the ox.

(Japanese) #2088 of 2866. type: realism

Do you have any good proverbs to share?

It's better to have and not need than to need and not have. Personal philosophy :)

It's not the shooting stars which illuminate the night , but the faithful, constant moon, which reflects the daytime light.

(kind of a "the race is not always to the swift" thing)

"the most beautiful birds are caged"   (I love that one because it's pretty complex... we use it to determine how "with-it" patients are sometimes in the hospital... =)  ~Shelah (blogring visitor)

I thank dear breath of dawn for introducing me to your website and now your blog. Thank you for your amazing writings about clutching and letting go - I'm still digesting it all. It's beautiful. Thank you again.

I've been thinking about proverbs a lot lately, wanting to get into Scriptural proverbs more... for wisdom. His wisdom.

Anyway, a proverb I love is, "Life's a journey not a destination."
Enjoy the ride.
Peace,
tree

ryc:

It is interesting that you see 'belonging to God' in terms of knowing God.

When you mention the idea of becoming more consciously aware of God by degrees I am reminded of Christ's words recorded in John's gospel: "He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him."

I really liked what you said about belonging to God to the degree that we give ourselves to God.

I don't want to come off as jerk (though I know I will), but there's one proverb I keep in mind, "People suck until they prove otherwise."
